These last 2 days have been tough to take. On my sixth morning in Amman, I woke up feeling quite ill. Shortly after sunrise on Tuesday the 17th, I awoke queasy and woozy. I threw up and dragged myself straight back into bed. I tried forcing myself to drink some water, but only brought about another episode of nausea. After two unpleasant trips to the bathroom sink, I slept once again. Two hours later, around 8:30, my roommate Ryan tried waking me. “We have to go soon,” he said. I opened my eyes, barely, and told him I didn’t think I could make it to SIT. He understood and continued getting ready to leave, while I slowly drifted back into my slumber. Before he left the apartment, I asked that he inform Carlene that I was feeling ill and would try to make it to SIT later on that morning. Well, I never got that far. In fact, I didn’t make it out of bed again until this morning. After sleeping all of yesterday, and not ingesting anything but one cup of anisette tea, I awoke this morning feeling drained and defeated. I also freaked out, because I slept through my deadline. Dammit. I didn’t submit my first story, which I have worked on with Hanna Trudo for a few days now. I have no cell phone to call anyone, nor do I have an internet connection. There’s an internet café a few blocks away from my apartment here in Shmeissani, but I can’t muster the energy to make it out of bed, so a few blocks and 2 flights of stairs are out of the question. What am I supposed to do now? Deadline was last night.
This morning, I woke up to dogs barking. Well, that’s what I first thought, but once my eyes were open I realized it was merely the sound of dogs barking coming out of Ryan’s iPhone. His alarm was going off, and it was just before 8. Our eyes connected across the room before I turned my face down into the pillow. I felt like shit. Not so nauseous anymore, but weak. My head was spinning.
I slept through the morning, missing my second straight day of reporting in Amman. About an hour ago, Mama Munira came in to check up on me and brought me more green tea with sage and annisette, which has been very helpful in settling my stomach. Auntie has also been giving me tea and checking up on my periodically over the last day and a half. I fell asleep again, only to wake up an hour later to a steaming bowl of fresh carrot soup. While I was a tad hesitant to eat anything again, I slurped my first spoonful. An hour later, another bowl of fresh mushroom soup. Mama Munira and Auntie are trying to nurse me back to health so that I won’t miss out on my program’s 3-day excursion to Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba this weekend. I’m going to take another nap, now, and hopefully I will continue to feel stronger and like myself as the afternoon progresses… After all, when else will I have the opportunity to go see these places? Stomach: heal!
